Office Challenge:
Rolling chair to rolling chair leap of faith

This physical challenge has been haunting me. I started pondering the physics behind the office chair jump a month or two ago, but I've been too chicken to test it out (if I still lived in the Slatch house, Dave and Pete would have mastered it on day 1). The basic idea:
  • Take two rolling office chairs.
  • Place in an open area. Office cubicle = bad idea.
  • Separate them with something that is a standard length, soft enough to fall on without causing serious injury. (empty shipping box?)
  • Stand on chair 1.
  • Jump to chair 2.
I think that separating the two chairs with an object is an important step which should not be overlooked. It avoids any unnecessary "I totally jumped farther than you" arguments, while at the same time providing something for the jumper to fall on, perhaps injuring themselves further - at very least adding to the comedy. Now, like I said, I have not tested this yet, but I'm fairly certain that the majority of failed attempts/injuries will occur due to a failed takeoff rather than landing. It will be very difficult to avoid the chair-kick-out effect. I have discussed this with my officemates and they have all agreed.

I would not try this in a non-carpeted office - I'm not saying this from an injury standpoint, you're going to get injured no matter what - I just don't think that a hardwood/cement/linoleum floor will provide enough friction to stabilize the chair rollers.

New on 75 or Less

  • Paul's got a review of Cobra Killer's 76/77. I like the album title.

  • There's also a new one from Jason. He's got a review of Slingshot Dakota's Keener Sighs, recently released on Immigrant Sun - former home of Mirale of 86 and Kevin Devine.

It's gonna make me spazz like bobcats on booze

  • Earlier in the week, a few promo agencies asked me for my "site numbers." When an agency asks you for numbers, they are really asking you "Should we send you free CDs or just harass you with bulk emails?" When I ran the traffic reports, I noticed a very strange statistic. Thousands of referrals from The Clash. Turns out we made their headlines. Thank you Jeremy.

  • Pedro Martinez travels with the man who played mini-Brando in The Island of Dr. Moreau. "We met through Franklin's friend in Providence." Thank Ben for the nightmares.

  • Moldy Peaches play one of their first sets in years tonight at The Hook.

  • Adult Swim MP3 downloads. The MC Chris track is brilliant. Thank Mark.

  • While the band takes time off to record, check out the Mason Dixon MP3s.

  • Paraphrased quote from my periodontist:
"Jon, I want you to know two things: 1. I have attended two of the most reputable dental schools. I am one of the best dental surgeons in New England. I will take care of you. 2. I would also like to tell you that I am the greatest amateur golfer in Rhode Island. You will note my trophy on your way past the waiting room."
  • Stella is doing a Kerry benefit at Southpaw on October 20th. Regular tickets are $30 ($40 at the door). Super-VIP tickets are $100, but you get to attend a fancy party with performers and an open bar.

  • The video for The New Year's "Disease." I had never realized that Chris Brokaw is their drummer. Mark pointed it out.

New on 75 or Less

  • My writing skills are hovering around a 0 today. Probably because I'm depressed over missing CMJ.

  • It's been a while since I wrote up a 75 or Less recap. This has been a pretty busy week for me. In the past few days I've been on job interviews with some amazing companies, signed on with the most amazing off all of those companies, given my two weeks at my current job and been elected president of my condo association. Thank you to all of the friends who have helped me out and everyone who took the time to sit down and talk with me.

  • During my time off, Paul has written two reviews (well, actually, he has written quite a few reviews, but most of them are waiting to be published) - one is for Calamalka's Shredders Dub and another for Trouble Everyday's Days vs. Night.

  • Brian sums up the new Hot Snakes disc in two words or less (but words that I am not allowed to say in front of children/parents do not count).

  • Jeremy and I have been exchanging CDs in dark alleys behind Mexican-themed bars and rugby clubs. The result is a few new reviews, the first being a writeup of Farma's self-titled release, out on Rhode Island's very own Wishing Tree Records.

  • And finally, Leslie returns to us with a review of the new Silkworm disc. I've been dying to give it a listen. Her review pushed me over the edge.

Don't let the sun go down on your grieviance

  • Jason Molina and Magnolia Electric Co. play The Living Room tonight.

  • I wish I knew more people with kids so I could tell them about Lowercase Tee.

  • Angered by the fact that the Bush campaign had "misappropriated and misinterpreted" the band's songs in their rallies, The Foo Fighters are playing massive amounts of pro-Kerry shows/rallies. You can catch them (with special guest John Kerry himself) tomorrow in Tempe, AZ playing back-to-back free debate sets. Tickets available here.

  • The video for Bloc Party's "Helicopter." Very cool. Via Paul.

  • Also via Paul: The Jay-Z remix rundown. There's even a DJ Premier remix. I must have missed that one.

  • The Carl Lewis motivational song is one of the more bizarre things in sports AND music history. Thank Good Man for the nightmares. Related: Carl Lewis butchers the National Anthem.

  • Amazon is selling a crazy Japanse import of Pavement's Shady Lane.

  • I've heard a bunch of people raving about the Tears for Fears album that came out a few weeks ago. Seriously. Stream the first single, "Call Me Mellow"
    [win] [ram]

  • Le Tigre covers "I'm So Excited" on This Island (due out next week). I want to hate it, but I can't. There's this really subtle early '80s reggae feel to the chorus that kind of gets to me. I've been trying to convince people to dress up as Le Tigre with me for Halloween. I'm having a tough time finding a girl with a mustache.
